This is a legal letter regarding the estate of "Mr. Randolph." Several years before his death, suits had been filed against the estate by three British firms. John Marshall appeared as the family lawyer. In this letter, he discusses the responsibilities of the devisees as being "as full as the heir to bond creditors in which the heir is expressly bound."

Thomas Mann Randolph was born 1 October 1768 at Tuckahoe in Henrico County, Virginia, to Thomas Mann Randolph (1740-1793) and Anne Cary Randolph (1745-1789).
